Preventing accidents…..saving lives
- Since 1790, Glasgow Humane Society has maintained and housed a full time Officer on Glasgow Green with boats and equipment for the prevention of waterway accidents and the rescue of persons in distress.
- Historically, in conjunction with Scottish Police Forces, the full time Officer has been available for the rescue of persons in distress or for the recovery of the bodies of persons drowned in the River Clyde, River Kelvin, Canals and Lochs for over 200 years.
- This service is also recognised by Glasgow District Council, the Clyde Port Authority, Strathclyde Regional Council, the Merchants House, Trades House and Glasgwegians home and away.
- The current Officer George Parsonage M.B.E, has rescued approx. 1,500 people and 500 bodies.
- According to George it's not just down to him, he says it is down to the 200 years of Unique Knowledge gained from millions of Clyde Rivermen and then collated by Glasgow Humane Society Officers.
- The Society operates wholly on Donation and Legacies to provide this free service.
- The Charity will now concentrate on what it has always seen as its main aim; Prevention - making sure that adequate safety facilities are in place along the banks of our waterways, removing potential hazards and educating in safe behaviour on and around the waterways.
- While the Society is grateful to the number of institutions and individuals who support it, to increase it's input into waterway safety, will need more funding.
- Any institutions or individuals who feel they could support this cause in any way, would be welcomed.
